Project Description

This project involved building 25m of freestanding dry stone wall at a property in North Lanarkshire. It was a pretty straight-forward job, although the random shape of the stone and some funky grain structure makes the building quite a process.  Most of the stone is very random in shape. Very few pieces have a “face”, so pretty much every stone goes through the same process of dressing, shaping, fitting, amending and finalling placement on the wall.

With the job site being 50 miles from my house the commute each way was a chore.  Added to this, all of the local authority areas I had to drive through decided that multiple sections of road works for pretty much the duration of the job were exactly what I needed.

The shorter days after the clocks changed at the end of October extended the job somewhat.  And there were some pretty cold weather to deal with too.  This part of Scotland is renowned for the rain but thankfully, I hate very few rain days.

Approximately 38 tonnes of Swinton Rubble from Hutton stone was used was used for this dry stone wall.

You can see more examples of my dry stone walling work on the projects page.
